Review Sanrenmu 4059 BUC-PH

Review  Sanrenmu 4059 BUC-PH

Introduction

If you are followers of the reviews on my blog and my YouTube channel, you will know that i am not very likely to acquire small folder or fixed knives, generally preferring larger sizes, so this type of measures do not abound in them.

But this model of Sanrenmu... i had been hypnotized for quite some time, i do not know if by the handle, with that texture that i liked very much, or by the type of locking that it carries or... let's say it had been attracting me for a long time so it’s the time to try it...

Exterior design and appearance

Undoubtedly, i think that there are several things to see, one is the small size of the knife, and another the design of the handle and the "back lock " locking system, one of the strongest there is if it is well done (see my comparison "liner lock" vs "back lock", depends more on the execution quality than the actual lock itself).

In the hand, despite being very small handle, has an acceptable grip thanks to the texture with grooves in G10 although aesthetically highlights especially, of course you can not grab with a whole hand but it helps its design.

The small blade is "drop point" type with hollow grind and uses the classic steel of Sanrenmu 8Cr14Mov. One thing that is curious is that the blade seems small with respect to the handle. In addition, as we can see, has a huge "belly", a large curvature that gives a good cut type "fishmonger's knife" but in small, also a false back edge to give you some more capacity for penetration. The blade is perfectly centered.

Not because it is so small it lacks the things of its bigger brothers, we also have a "pocket clip" and even an elongated lanyard hole, of design.

Aesthetically, i find it very attractive, i do not know what this knife has, but visually it is one of the ones i like with a very small size in the Sanrenmu universe.

To give you a better idea of its small dimensions:

Comparative

The Sanrenmu GR5-605 is one of my favorite small knives for its quality / price ratio, but this Sanrenmu 4059BUC-PH is very similar in price. Let's see…

The blade is stronger in the 4059 but the 605 by its full flat grind cuts better when putting the whole blade in an object and not to make wedge effect in addition to having greater power of penetration.

The grip of the 605 is good thanks to having the finger choil on the blade itself but on the 4059 it is also good without having said finger choil, although it does have a small one on the handle itself.

Aesthetically the 4059 is prettier.

The truth is that for the price they have, it would take me both.

Management and use

Once we have the small folding knife in our hand, we are ready to open it using the "thumb studs", the most comfortable thing is to use both hands for its size, but it is possible to open it with one too. The opening is smooth but it is different from a "liner lock", you have to open it slowly and you can not make a finger stroke by the blade retention that produces the "back lock".

We can not pretend that there is a good grip with this size, but the handle has a texture with grooves that helps not to slip the hand too much, although it is a very smooth texture. The handle is anatomical and the final curvature allows us to support two fingers on it and the finger choil at the beginning a third finger. The bad thing is that we do not have any type of “jimping” to grab the blade from above.

The blade could be defined as short and with good blade width (for its size) and very pronounced curvature near the tip ("belly"), it reminds me of the type of blade of a "fishmonger's knife" but in small, so it should have similar characteristics in terms of cutting on top of a board by moving the blade from top to bottom on a point without having to drag it. By my tests, i can define the factory sharpening as simply good.

The lock "back lock" i find it very interesting and is one of the most remarkable things of the knife, not offering vertical blade game, which is something i like to check in this type of locking by past experiences, it gives me confidence and of course i prefer it to a “slip joint” and even a thin “liner lock”.

In addition, the sound that produces the "back lock" when is activated is very convincing, i was surprised to be such a small folder knife. And to close the knife, the pressure that must be done on the push button of the "back lock" is not hard as in other models that i have seen, it is pressed with comfort. It is very well done.

Final verdict

You already know me, i'm not much of a small knives, and this is one of Sanrenmu's smallest, but i've always loved this model when i've seen it in Internet. I think it's built with an excellent quality, i really like the handle and its locking system, i think that in my collection it's going to take the place of the Sanrenmu GR5-605.

I think that to put in a pocket if you need a edge at some point is very appropriate (cut plastic packs in supermarkets etc.) due to the very low weight (48 grams), you do not realize that you carry it.

What I liked the most

- It has always been among my favorites visually in small knives of Sanrenmu when i have seen it in Internet, i was not wrong when i finally had it.

- I think it may be my favorite very small size folder knife that i own.

- Good handle with grooves and "back lock" locking that gives me confidence.

- Despite the small size, the construction is very good, very good "fit & finish".

- Due to the very little weight that you have, you do not realize that you are wearing it, so it does not matter to throw it on just in case.

What i liked less

- The blade could be somewhat less curved by the tip and also longer because the handle allows it.

- Due to the small size, a bit of “hump” with “jimping” would have been fine, to catch it better.
