Review Thrunite Catapult V6 (version 2)
Introduction
They say that this flashlight is one of the best thrower flashlights for the price that you can get on the market. The truth is that I would like to check it, so let's see it…
Design, appearance and build quality
This flashlight is one of those that you just like to see in photos, it has a traditional style, I would say, it reminds me a bit of a C8, but a little bigger (wider but similar in length).
The grip seems good thanks to the fluted body of the flashlight, in the shape of diamonds, which is quite original. I think one of the things that stands out the most is the large head of the flashlight along with its heatsinks.
The build quality is good, as is the assembly, very smooth threads and no apparent imperfections in the body of the flashlight.
As a flashlight within Thrunite's “Catapult” name, it is of the thrower type, I think that is evident only by seeing the smooth reflector and the size of the head, by the way the lens is made of glass, not plastic. Given this, I prefer flashlights either balanced between launch and flood or directly flood, but in the next section we will see that.
Power is provided by a 5000 mAh 26650 lithium battery (included) to power the SST70 LED, offering a maximum of 2800 lumens with a cool white color temperature. The range is 692 meters.
The body of the flashlight is made of premium anodized aluminum type III, waterproof IPX8 (up to 2 meters under water) with anti-abrasive treatment on the surface and resistance to falls up to 1.5 meters.
In the package next to the flashlight itself, we have:
- A USB-C cable for charging the battery, a very favorable point to be able to charge it without having to open it and remove the battery, apart from the fact that we do not need an external charger.
- Two replacement rubber washers.
- Side switch cap.
- Two covers of the USB connector, in this model they have put two and not one.
- Metal ring.
- The always useful wrist strap.
- 26650 5000mAh battery.
- And one thing that always makes me happy: a good quality carrying sheath.
Regarding the measures we find:
Total length |
Width at widest part |
Weight without battery |
Dust and water protection
|
13.8 cm |
5.8 cm |
203 gr |
IPX-8 |
And of course, I am happy that it comes with a cover of acceptable quality and that it fits very well in the shape and size of the flashlight.
Handling and use
Speaking of handling and use, we are going to base ourselves on the table of characteristics offered by the brand:
Actually, looking at the specs, there is one thing that I really like that is not easy to see in a flashlight. I explain:
The "turbo" mode of flashlights in general is very good, to see very well, but this usually lasts for seconds or a few minutes, immediately, due to the heat, it drops to an acceptable power for the integrity of the LED. But many times I am not interested in seeing a few seconds or a couple of minutes very well, I am interested, for example, in what the flashlight offers me in lumens for an hour, two hours, etc. And in this flashlight, I love what it offers.
The name of the flashlight is a thrower specialist, but I prefer that they be balanced at least in terms of flooding, in this case, of course, it has an incredible throw, with a very intense and not small "hot spot", but we also have a usable flood part so perfect. However, I would have increased the flooding even more at the cost of losing brightness in the hot spot.
The modes seem good to me, the 5 classic Thrunite modes, we can see them above in the characteristics table, although the difference in lumens from high to medium mode seems to me to be a rather big jump.
This flashlight is not to have at home in case the power goes out or to make electrical repairs before removing the electricity from the house, it is an outdoor flashlight, and also a thrower, ideal for long-distance viewing, searching for people, security guards , to have in a country house and be able to see in the distance what that noise has been...
We have a top button that is used to
turn it on and off, as well as to change modes. The way of use is the
same as other Thrunite models and similar to other brands:
With
the button pressed for a short space we turn on or off, the firefly
mode is only accessed if we leave it pressed with the flashlight off.
Once turned on, leaving it pressed we rotate through the modes, a
double press takes us to the turbo mode whether it is on or off, four
presses would access the strobe mode. If we leave the power button
pressed we access the firefly mode. Come on, the same way of working
as many of the models of this brand.
How could it be otherwise, this Thrunite model also has a battery warning, with the typical colors of the brand, blue, red and red flashing, as it discharges. The flashlight's USB-C port allows us to charge the battery comfortably using any charger we have for a mobile phone.
In the following screenshots we can see the firefly, low, medium and high modes, it may be that due to camera sensor issues the differences are not well appreciated, but in reality they can be seen:
Final verdict
This flashlight has the reputation of being one of the best throwers on the market for the price. My opinion after testing it is that, of course, it is a great flashlight. One of the things that I liked is that, although it has a launch of almost 700 meters, we can have flooding in a good size halo.
Good design, a superior grip to normal thanks to the striated body, an autonomy that is what I like most about the product, since being able to spend so much time without heating problems at more than 1400 lumens is somewhat priceless. I don't like flashlights that have a powerful light mode for the WOW effect and after a few seconds they already give a very low light, you have to make sure that it can sustain a good power for a long time, and this one does.
I also like that it comes with so many elements, including the sheath, I really miss sheaths many times both in flashlights and folding knives, but there are brands that do not put them in the package in any way, Thrunite does put them in some models and I appreciate it.
In my opinion, if you like throwers but with some flooding, you're going to like this flashlight.
Things i love
- Attractive appearance, good grip and restrained size to have that power and range of light.
- Sheath, bring a sheath, which is of a certain quality I like it. Not all brands put sheaths on their flashlights.
- I highlight the power of more than 1417 lumens for 102 that it can sustain without heating problems.
- Good finishes.
Things i would change
- I like that it throws, but I preferred to lose intensity of the hot spot and that the light reaches less distance in exchange for increasing the intensity of the flood halo.
- It always happens to me with the Thrunite buttons, which I wish they were bigger, and without that border that gets in the way when pressing said button.
