Review Wuben Gecko E61

Review Wuben Gecko E61

Introduction

Today is of course a different review, and it is because it is the first time that I review a “tactical” pen. I admit that apart from folding knives, fixed knives, multitools and flashlights, I like pens in general, and I had been seeing items in this category for a long time, which come from different brands, usually aimed at self-defense or rescue.

In this case, I think it is much more versatile than the normal tactical pens that we usually see.

Let's check it out.

Design, appearance and build quality

As it usually happens to me in things that attract me a lot, this is one of those pieces that since I saw it for the first time, I really liked its appearance and it attracted me. First of all, the colors are quite nice, you have it in black, blue and midnight blue, which is the one I have chosen.

I think that with the presentation it has, with the magnetic box it comes with, it seems to say "I am an option to give away on a birthday, at Christmas..." because of course the box has a better view than what flashlights usually come with what we usually see.

The construction is aircraft grade aluminum, and the design looks strong, it is not going to break from using it as it could in something of poor quality, that is to say, it shows that it is of high quality, and for the price it is bound to be like that.

There are things in the design that I find interesting, such as the double tip, that we can exchange one for the other with a single gesture, we can have two at the same time and exchange them quickly. Also the leds of the recessed flashlight, which fit well in the body, better than the old flashlight pens where the bulb was at the tip, not on the side.

We have 4 types of tips: ballpoint, zirconium tip, writing tip without ink (and I understand that it breaks glass) and stylus for touch screens.

About the ink sticks, they are very very small, which is normal due to the double-ended design that it has, but what is annoying is seeing that only a small part of it is filled with ink from that small stick, with which In the end, the amount of ink we have is nothing short of ridiculous.

We have a magnet so we can hold it on metallic materials, I always like that. In addition, a pocket clip cannot be missing, as any pen has.

Note that it is waterproof with the IP66 standard and resistant to drops of 1 meter. The integrated 120 mah battery can be easily charged with its micro-usb port.

It definitely looks very nice visually to me, there is no doubt about that, I think it can attract people who love this type of pens.

Handling and use

Once we have the pen in hand, one of the things that I notice is that its shape is a bit square, it is not that it has edges, but I would prefer it to have a more rounded shape for the writing option, let's not forget that, although it can do many things, it is clear that being a pen and writing is the most obvious option and should do the best, along with the clear flashlight option.

The interchangeable tip system is as follows:

We can always have two tips at the same time, which can be seen in the double tip system that it carries. Here is an interesting design because we can go from one end to the other quickly, to do this we unlock in the system, we turn from one end to the other and we lock the system again.

One thing I like is that the system feels robust and is well fixed, you even have to apply some force to unlock it.

Apart from the fact that we can always have two tips, each one of them can be the one we want, with a system that is screwed (that makes them very well fixed), that is, we can choose which two specific tips are going to be, and exchange them quickly with a simple gesture.

Also one of the star features, the built-in flashlight, which can be rotated up to 270º, making the pen very functional, being able to point to the area we want to see while we leave it resting on a surface and somewhere metallic thanks to the built-in magnet, which It is quite powerful, it is 130 lumens in a tiny size, with a range of 8 meters. In general, the modes of 3, 30 and 130 lumens seem well staggered to me.

Here comment that we not only have "white" light for lighting, but we have an alarm signal that is not the typical SOS or strobe, but with red and blue colors flashing very powerfully. That's not something you usually see, I don't have any flashlight that does it.

With a single button, we can go from the red and blue “alarm” mode to the “normal” mode to illuminate, and we also have three lighting power modes, which are chosen by long pressing, as usually happens in Wuben.

Regarding the type of light, it is clearly flooding, which is how it should be in a device like this, since it is not used outdoors, it is in case the electricity goes out in the house, to repair something, or to see something on the street, something, the lock of the car if it is parked in a dark place, if the keys fall on the ground and you do not see them, to look for something...

Final verdict

A very nice pen to see, also with a presentation above normal. It's not only pretty, it's very functional, in fact I've seen quite a few tactical pens that at best write and have a tungsten tip, or maybe write and have a light, but with as much functionality as this one, I haven't seen any in the market. There may be, but I haven't seen it.

Apart from the visual, it is noted that it is of high quality, for example the fixing of the tips is very firm, the flashlight hinge is smooth and the quality is noticeable, the light is very powerful in high mode and very pleasant by the flood it offers.

However, not everything is perfect, for example its normal price without discounts is too high, the shape of the pen should be more rounded and the ink refills are ridiculously small.

In general, a high-quality product and if you like pens with many features, I don't think there are any on the market like this one.

Things i love

- Very beautiful to see, with attractive colors. I think it draws a lot of attention and anyone would want one.

- Interesting to be able to change from one point to another quickly with the mechanism that it brings.

- Good flood light, powerful on high mode for its size.

- Good materials and robust construction.

Things i would change

- The ink sticks are very short (due to the design of being able to exchange the two tips that we choose) but that the ink refill is much less than the stick itself is something that annoys.

- Micro-USB is something old, it should have USB-C.

- The price without discounts is high.
