Review Ganzo G720
Introduction
Today the analysis refers undoubtedly
one of the folder knife of the Ganzo new era most important and most successful.
When it was released some claim to be the best knife Ganzo ever made, well, let's
see what we have in hand and we will try to see if it is the best that has made
this brand or it is not.
Exterior design and appearance
All of us know that Ganzo often
copy their designs from other brands and this is no exception, the design is
very very inspired (not an exact copy) on the Lion Steel SR1, high price knife
with high quality materials. Although they look very similar we can see
differences in each part that makes up the knife.
OverView
To begin the steel of the
blade is not the same (the G720 uses the typical 440C of the brand), the shape
of the blade isn’t the same, the handle is also not equal or the material used,
instead of aluminum is used G10 to choose in three colors, black, green and
orange. The locking system, originally on the SR1 is a “frame lock”, on the
G720 is the usual “axis lock” of the of the brand (although not always the case).
Note that the model G722 of the same brand offers us some similar qualities to
the G720, we get a very precise "frame lock" on it and a similar
size, although the blade does not have the same curvature neither handle the
same texture, the closest thing to the SR1 is the G720.
Opened view
The knife is visually quite large
for somebody excessively. But in my opinion is not so large, actually does not have
a particularly long blade, for example an Enlan EL01, EL08 or Inron MY803 have
a longer blade, but it has a very wide blade and a very important thickness
until near the end. This makes it visually stunning and very attractive. It
also happens that the handle is very wide and thick, which makes almost bulk
more than any other knife closed. I think we can see the G720 as a bodybuilder,
wide, strong, with volume more than a basketball player tall and thin, both are
great, but they are great each in their own way. Specific data on its
dimensions and weight are: 9 cm blade with 4 mm thick, a total length of 21 cm,
a width of 3.2 cm blade, which is a lot, and weighing 208 g in our scale (tanks
weigh).
A beast of a blade
Returning to the blade, you have
a classic style "drop point" flat grind (no full) and a great belly which
it makes it very suitable for culinary tasks, although with the thickness of blade
that has it is not for delicate cuts because it will "make wedge". The
sharpening factory is medium, is not a great sharp or shaves, cut paper but it
is not the same to cut paper than cut paper very well, smoothness and the sound
cutting of blade doing it gives an idea of sharpening. We have a "jimping" not too pronounced to hold better the blade.
Blade detail
Relative to the handle is very
anatomical and much wider and thicker than most folder knives which makes it
very comfortable in the hand, also it provides security for the way that
incorporates a guard. The G10 has a very nice texture to the eye and i would say
that have an average grip, but in this case, due to the good shape of the
handle is not so important the grip texture.
Handle detail
We have a “glass breaker” quite
unaggressive, I have no doubt that break glass but it’s nothing pointed, tightens
and helps sustain the “pocket clip”, wich let to hide entirely the knife when
you use the clip due to that, that is attached by the “glass breaker” at the beginning
of the handle.
Closed view
Glass breaker
A curious thing i have not seen
in other Ganso is that the logo, model and type of steel blade is inscribed in
relief and cleaning the blade the chamois used stays hooked in the inscriptions.
Handling
and use
The locking system is the classic
"axis lock" of the brand, very hard at first but in a few days improves
and becomes quite soft. I think Ganzo has improved somewhat its "axis
lock" and i have tried to see how engages the lock cylinder on the blade, and
it seems a little deeper than other models, certainly deeper than in the G710
model for sure and i think also more than in the G704 and G712. There is no
problem in handling and can open and close with one hand pulling the “axis
lock” backward or using some of its thumb studs suddenly with a finger.
System lock detail
I think the best use for this
knife could be the bushcraft tasks due to its characteristics of strength and
curvature to cut food, you can replace a fixed knife for tasks with branches,
wood, preparing food… I do not see much for military use or self-defense due to
the curvature of the blade and large width, that do not make it very
penetrating, but really we can use it for anything.
Final verdict
Honestly, i think it has one of
the best attributes that should have a knife and it is… you draw a smile when you
open it. Very strong, big, good implementation of the "axis lock" no
visible flaws, well built and well, i can not say if it is the best done by
Ganzo but it is certainly one of the best to date for my taste.
Pros:
- Impressive blade, very wide,
thick and flat grind not full, very strong.
- Visually striking, enters the
eye.
- anatomic handle very wide and
thick especially, with guard on the handle.
- A beast of a knife
Cons:
- Due the thickness of the blade
is not suitable for cutting food into thin slices.
- Too heavy and/or big for some
people.
- "Axis lock" very hard
at first but softens and normalizes after some use.
- Glass breaker could be sharper
to improve their effectiveness.
Final view
