Review SRM 1168

Review SRM 1168

Introduction

In this same blog and on my YouTube channel we already had a first encounter with this promising new brand called SRM, it was the 7228 model that made a pleasant impression on me.

Don't you think it's time to see a second model? let's go there!.

Exterior design and appearance

Although the previous model analyzed, the 7228 was a beautiful city knife, now it is time for a knife with a more serious aspect, also more tactical but without standing out in it. I see it as a sober and elegant folding knife, it is the adjective that comes to mind.

It is not a knife that attracts attention like other models, but this is positive in some cases where we want to go more unnoticed.

The knife is larger than the 7228 but still maintains a fairly contained size within the category of "large" folding knives.

One of the things that stand out for me a lot about the knife and that is the main reason for having it, is its blade. It has a blade that I love, very light "clip point" type, because it goes straight from the hump to the tip. It is very much in the Spyderco blade style.

Continuing with the blade, we observe two opening methods, one with the "flipper" and the other with the gap we have in the blade, which in this case is not round. The steel used is D2, which is one of the steels most desired by people due to its good characteristics that it offers without raising the price much.

The grind is partial flat type with a good belly near the end of the tip, something I like is its large blade width. The folding knife is a good slicer but it is also strong thanks to its 3.1 mm thick spine.

This particular model, unlike several others from SRM, only comes in one option in terms of handle color and blade style, the handle is always black and the blade is uncoated. In other models of the brand they have several versions to choose from.

Although SRM has several models with "axis lock", called by the brand "ambi lock", this knife has a "liner lock", quite robust indeed.

Regarding its dimensions, despite falling into the category of "large" folding knife, it is very contained. You can see its specifications in the following table:

Total length

Blade length

Blade thickness

Weight on scale

19.8 cm

8.6 cm

3.1 mm

124 gr

Do you know something? I love the aesthetics of the folding knife, it does not have a spectacular appearance designed to attract attention, it is simply beautiful. I define it as sober, elegant and pretty.

Handling and use

For me it is a folding knife that could be an EDC perfectly, for daily work. It is a good cutter because of the curvature it has, and although it has its tactical style as well, it is not intended to be a tactical specialty that does not know how to do anything else. I see that blade very useful for many different tasks.

Once we have the closed knife in our hand, we must open it, for this we can open it with the hole in the blade, which is not the method I prefer, first because it is not round and costs more and second because... what a softness of the "flipper”and what bearings it brings. You know that I have many more knives with bearings, but I think there is none that surpasses this one in softness, it is pure butter, it is a pleasure to play with it by opening and closing it for the mere fact of enjoying that softness. I do not remember any softer than this, and that they are just as smooth... I would have to look very well to see it.

This incredible softness comes from two points: first, because it does not have a blade retention as large as other knives, which spoil the opening experience, it has a very well adjusted retention, it does not open by itself but it is not very hard either. And secondly, because the bearings are as smooth as possible. The sum of both gives rise to one of the best opening experiences I have ever seen.

The handle is in G10 and visually it does not stand out especially when looking at it, but when we use it we see that it has a texture throughout the area, giving us a really very good grip.

We can use the hump that it brings to put a finger and better hold the knife, with an advanced grip we have more control for delicate tasks. In the hump we have a jimping with a very good grip due to the chosen crenellations.

Final verdict

I love the knife, for its sobriety and elegance, for its magnificent blade and for its incredible softness when opening.

Good quality of materials used such as D2 steel of the blade, a “liner lock” well adjusted to the base of the blade and with a good thickness.

Another little jewel of the SRM brand recommended without a doubt.

Things that i love

- Sober and elegant appearance, I find it quite pretty without having to attract attention.

- D2 steel is one of the most requested by all, very good steel at a price that does not make the piece much more expensive.

- Very nice blade, also very usable. Hump with jimping for better grip.

- Incredible softness. I don't remember any piece of mine that surpasses it in opening smoothness using the “flipper”.

Things I would change

- The hump could be longer so that a greater proportion of the finger could be put on.

- Also the opening of the blade could be round for greater comfort, but it is also true that with the "flipper" and its softness, I would never use the gap of the blade to open it.

    1. Hi. I have not used the knife enough for it to happen to me. But I have seen that problem in some people. It's a shame because it's one of my favorite SRM knives, due to the shape of the blade.
