Review With Armour Mammoth (WA-034BK)

Introduction

There are several things in cutlery that always attract me, one is the big knives and the other the beast knives. This piece belongs to the second category.

A mammoth is destroying and crushing wherever it passes, just like this beast of a knife... the name suits it well.

Exterior design and appearance

What can I say about its appearance? That looks like a bad beast, openly, without ornaments. It is not intended to win a beauty pageant but to do its job.

It draws attention without a doubt, and it is for several things. First, its good size, although it is not really that big in length but it does have a blade width that exceeds normal, and I like it to exceed something.

Another thing that will attract attention is the hollow of the blade, which is double, the first half has a sharper hollow than the second half.

And surely even the handle will attract attention for its shape and its great guard.

One thing is for sure, this knife does not leave you indifferent, you may like it or you may not, but I don't think it has a middle ground.

Among the characteristics of the blade we have a 440C steel, which is a good classic steel and used in many pieces, this time they have not opted for a D2 steel as in some of their knives. The style of the tip is a very strong “drop point”, with a lot of material in that area.

Going back to the two types of grinds the blade, its objective is to leave half for fine tasks and the other half for harder work, so that it can withstand the chopping better for example.

The handle is made in G10 and the knife is full tang for maximum strength. In the next section we will see that indentation that it has, since it is quite deep, in addition, the set is designed to be able to grip the piece in various ways.

As for the cover, it is made of kydex, very much the style seen in other brands.

Regarding the measures we find:

Total length

Handle length

Blade thickness

Blade length

Steel

24.5 cm

12.7 cm

4 mm

12.7 cm

440C HRC(58 – 59)

The truth is that visually it agrees with my personal tastes, it seems to me a knife with a lot of character.

Handling and use

The knife is not made to be put in the display case, it is made for work, and I would say hard work. It does not look delicate, quite the opposite.

With the knife in hand, we can see the good texture of the handle, not only because of the texturing of dots, but we also have grooves in the G10 itself that will allow us a very good grip even with wet hands. I already said that it is not made to be beautiful but to do its job.

The grip is good due to the aggressive texture of the handle and the adaptability to the hand is also good, the only thing that perhaps the recessed part of the handle could not be that deep, one centimeter less would be fine, but no problem.

We can see how there are different types of grip depending on whether we use the hump of the blade or the finger choil to support the finger on the upper jimping of the blade (in my YouTube video you can see these grips better). The hump has a good angle but it would have been nice if it had a jimping, it is an easy thing to do and it improves its use.

One of the things that attracts attention is the double emptying of the sheet, I have done tests on paper (again you can go to my YouTube channel) and the conclusion is that the fine work part (which begins the grind from above of the blade), cuts quite well but that the hard work zone (that the emptying starts lower than the fine work zone and therefore has more material near the edge) cuts the paper poorly.

This is due to the fact that it has been wanted to leave the part for hard work less sharp than the part for fine work to avoid possible nicks while chopping for example.

We must also talk about the sheath, which adapts very well to the shape of the knife being kydex. The knife is very well fixed inside, it will never come out by accident. In fact, it fits so well inside that it is difficult to remove it, you have to use more force than usual both to put it in the sheath and to remove it, so no matter how much you move around the field, the knife will stay safe in its sheath.

Final verdict

The knife is a real beast, and I like that. It does not joke around, you feel powerful carrying it, wishing there was some opportunity to use it, and that is very important in a knife because it means that it gives you security and enjoyment of using it.

I like brave brands, and I think With Armor it is, it is a risky design but when you have it in your hand it draws a smile on your face, even if you let it go, after a while you will come back for it to pick it up again and be able to admire it in your hand.

Good finishing qualities, 440C steel and a design that leaves no one indifferent. Welcome to these beasts from With Armor.

Things that i love

 - The beast aspect, wonderful. And it is not only appearance, it is that with the strength it has, it transmits to you that you can do anything with it.

 - That spine thickness in general and close to the tip in particular make the knife extremely robust.

 - I love the width of the blade blade, with it in hand you are willing to chop anything to use it.

Things I would change

 - I would add a jimping to the hump, it is something easy to do and improves control/grip.

 - The slit in the handle would make it a little shallower, even 1 cm, but still not annoying.

 - You have to use a greater force than usual to insert the knife and to remove it from the sheath.
