Review Hx Outdoors TD-01C “the rock”

Review Hx Outdoors TD-01C “the rock”

Introduction

Hx Outdoors has entered strong in the world of quality chinese cutlery at a low price for a while. Above all it stands out because it has hoarded in some way the market of fixed knives (not folder knives) among other brands.

Today we are going to see a mythical bushcraft knife of the brand, and probably one of the most famous and acclaimed of any brand with which it competes.

Apart from the revision, my objective is to give my opinion on the following sentence that circulates:

"The Hx Outdoors TD-01C “the rock” is the best bushcraft knife for the price you can to buy."

Let's see…

Exterior design and appearance

I think we're all going to agree that visually the knife attracts, enters by sight, it's pretty nice and it looks ergonomic even before you pick it up.

Global view

It is a knife oriented to bushcraft, with a good thickness of back edge and full flat grind, which is the morphology that most demand usually have in these types of knives.

Good backedge thickness

The blade is made of D2 steel with a hardness of 59 HRC, which is a steel of higher range than what we usually find in this price range, it is a steel that isn’t technically stainless but rather resistant to corrosion, we also have a coated blade to help it not rust. The tip is a "drop point" type of classic cut, which is usually the most seen in this type of knives for its versatility. I have found a middle factory sharpening, this model usually comes like this.

Detail of the blade

Also on the blade we can see a finger choil not very pronounced for fine work and grip forward as well as a "jimping" above with an aggressive very soft and an area prepared to make fire by a fire steel.

Finger choil, smooth jimping and D2 steel

As for the handle, it is in G10, very anatomical, with two holes to make a spear with it, together with a good guard, ending with the famous "hammer" that characterizes the knife.

Regarding the measures we find:

Total length
Blade width
Blade thickness
Blade length
Scale weight without sheath
22 cm
3.3 cm
4 mm
10 cm
251 gr

Regarding the case, i prefer to see it in the “handling and use” section, but i must say that i like it a lot, probably being the best case until now that i have seen in a knife of this range. We think that at such low prices it is usually sacrificed much more in the case than in the quality of the knife.

Management and use

Sometimes the pieces have a nice design, which immediately enters us by sight but when we have it in hand it is something else and it was not so good. Well, this is not the case, it feels as good in the hand as it seems, the handle is comfortable, anatomical, with a G10 texture of very soft level. The hand is well protected by the guard and the jimping seems effective with very little level of aggressiveness.

The blade is very suitable for bushcraft, full flat grind and "drop point" tip that falls quite towards the end, allowing a good penetration level. It is a strong blade, with D2 steel and a pretty good retention of edge, in all the hard tests that i have seen it has come out quite well, there will be no problems doing "battoning" or any task in the field.

The "hammer" of the knob is true that makes the knife lose balance because the weight is behind, but i do not really care too much about that. I always like that knives have glass-breakers, although it's not something that's going to make me not buy it for not wearing it, but i like them. In this case, this "hammer" in addition to breaking glass is designed to pulverize and crush things like stones, nuts and fruits in general, or to use it as a real hammer by nailing nails or wooden stakes on the ground in field tasks. I can assure you that this "hammer" is hard and it is not going to be marked the heads of the nails on it for example, it is really to use it without contemplations and it is not of adornment.

And we come to the case, well, say that manufacturers usually reduce the cost there when we talk about such low prices, but of the cases that i have received so far (without being wonderful), i think it is the best case received for the following reasons: kydex, compartment for fire steel, the knife does not move anything inside, area to sharpen... so as to the case, better than others, even compared with other Hx Outdoors knives like the model D-161 (tactical knife that i also love).

Final verdict

Let's remember the phrase from the beginning of the review:

"The Hx Outdoors TD-01C “the rock” is the best bushcraft knife for the price you can to buy."

What does that statement seem to me?, well, for the price at which the knife is sold, and analyzing other Chinese brands such as Ganzo, Cima, Sanrenmu, Harnds... I think the phrase is correct, for the same price i have not found something better. There are good knives for less money and they will serve us well, but we will not get certain things like in this model, starting with the steel in D2. The knives that are sold at lower prices have steels that range from 7Cr17Mov, 8Cr13Mov or 440C, but not D2.

The ergonomics, design, quality, finish, the hammer on the knob or the case (also above what is usually seen at lower prices) make that although there are other good knives for lower price, i do not find for the same price a knife for bushcraft better than this one.

It is not only its aesthetic, it is also a very strong knife capable of "battoning", and that all the hard tasks that i have seen it performs, it has passed them perfectly.

Therefore, i must strongly recommend this bushcraft knife, it is more, it is already a classic and many of you who are reading me probably already have it, there is enough information about it everywhere and we can say without fear that it is one of the knives most famous for buscraft among chinese brands, hence there are everywhere videos or analysis about it.

Essential in the collection.

The best

- "The Hx Outdoors TD-01C “the rock” is the best bushcraft knife for the price you can to buy.": with this little more must be said.
- It is very beautiful visually, very aesthetic and ergonomic.
- D2 steel. There are very good knives for less price but you will not be able to have this steel.
- The case, which is where manufacturers usually reduce cost when we talk about prices so contained, is one of the best i've seen, if not the best (without being wonderful). It is kydex, it retains perfectly the knife, it has a ferrocerium (fire steel) compartment and a small area of diamond to sharpen.

Worst

- The hammer some will not like because it unbalances the weight of the knife. I particularly like the hammer, and in general i always like some kind of glass-breaker in the handle.
- I would like a bigger blade and in general a larger size of the knife, although that is my personal taste.
- The tip is visually thin for what I like on a bushcraft knife.
