Review Thrunite Catapult PRO

Review Thrunite Catapult PRO

Introduction

I believe from within, that this is one of the Thrunite brand flashlights that is giving the most talk, which is normal when we see that its beam of light can reach more than a kilometer away...

Design, appearance and build quality

It is clear that when we see it, it inevitably reminds us of the Catapult V6 model (also reviewed on the blog) from the same brand, and I also find it attractive in its exterior design, although I like the V6 better in appearance.

The grip of the flashlight is good due to the grooves on the body, and we cannot ignore the large head, which will be one of the things that catches our attention, and that is that a large reflector is necessary to do what it does. Curiously, in said head it does not have heatsinks as it happened in the V6, here they are lower down, in the body of the flashlight.

The construction quality follows the brand's standard, it is good, as is the assembly and of course the threads are very smooth and without apparent imperfections.

We already know that the name "Catapult" at Thrunite means very throwing flashlights, and this is the third model within the "Catapult" category that we make. Although, we have the most thrower model there is, the PRO. You only have to see the 6.5 centimeter wide head with smooth reflector and ultra-clear toughened glass to imagine the specialty of this flashlight.

The power is obtained from a 5000 mAh 26650 lithium battery (included) to power the SFT-70 led, offering us a maximum of 2713 lumens with a “cool white” color temperature. The range it provides us is 1005 meters, more than 1 kilometer!

The body of the flashlight is made of premium anodized aluminum type III waterproof IPX8 (up to 2 meters underwater) with anti-abrasive treatment on the surface and resistance to falls up to 1.5 meters.

In the package that arrives, apart from the flashlight itself, they give us:

- A USB-C cable for charging the battery, a very favorable point to be able to charge it without having to open it and remove the battery, apart from the fact that we do not need an external charger.

- Two replacement rubber washers.

- Two USB connector covers, in this model they have put two and not one as in others.

- Wrist strap.

- Battery 26650 of 5000 mAh.

- And one thing that I always say that I really like when they bring flashlights: a good quality transport sheath.

Handling and use

As always, to talk about handling and use, I like to base myself on the list of characteristics that the brand offers us. But before I have to say that the grip of the flashlight is one of the most aggressive I have, I mean that it has a lot of grip but the texture is very aggressive, without doing any damage.

When looking at the specifications table, as we have already mentioned before, the more than 1 km of distance that this impressive flashlight gives us stands out. Then looking at the light power we get 2713 lumens in turbo mode, which is very good, but what interests me the most is how long a good reasonable power can give us, so we go to the table and check that we can have 2 full hours with more than 900 lumens, excellent. It is not usual to have that power for so long, but here there is more body to dissipate the heat. Of course it's not bad to have 42 lumens for 53 hours too.

Of course all the "catapult" variants of Thrunite are throwers, but this one takes the cake, more than 1 kilometer away its light beam can reach. This incredible launch translates into a very intense "hot spot" and it is not small, of course we could ask for more flood intensity, but we would lose range.

Let's not forget that this flashlight is designed to throw as far as possible, no matter what it floods, although we also have flooding by LED power. But it is not a TC20 of the brand, which is flooder.

Regarding the modes of operation, this is the first flashlight from the brand that I review that has a smooth ramp mode. This means that we can go up and down the light power smoothly, the light that we need, and we do not have to adhere to specific preset modes.

By having an infinite mode, it is not possible to comment on the light difference between modes, since we can have what we want, it is a smooth ramp.

Of course, it is specialized in throwing the beam of light, it is not for use at home, which can also be clear, but it is not its objective. This flashlight is for outdoors, and I am sure that in a country house, or to see that everything is in order on a farm, for security guards, for night routes through the countryside... for all that, great, you will be able to see what it is happening at a very long distance, and it will also flood light around us enough, even if it is not flooder.

The problem with such flashlights is that even at minimum power, the central point of light is so intense that it can reflect off white walls, white clothes and the like, so for very close distances the light is not pleasant. However, I have tried to illuminate a room that was many meters in the background, even crossing a yard and it has been able to completely illuminate that room in the dark. So, at a distance, light is wonderful, but not very close.

We have a top button that is used to turn it on and off, as well as to choose the preset modes or the smooth ramp mode. The way of use is different from other Thrunite models:

With the button pressed for two seconds with the flashlight on we activate or deactivate the firefly mode. When it is on, leaving the button pressed activates the ramp up, and if we release and repeat the operation, the ramp down is activated.

With the flashlight turned off or on, with a double press we activate the turbo mode, also with three presses, the strobe mode is activated.

It should be said that we also have a power lock by pressing five times while it is off (and also available in other ways).

It goes without saying that we have memory for the last ramp level used (not for firefly or strobe mode).

Of course, this Thrunite model also has a battery warning, with the typical colors of the brand, blue, red and flashing red, as it discharges. The flashlight's USB-C port allows us to charge the battery comfortably using any charger we have for a mobile phone or similar.

In the following screenshots we can see the low, medium ramp modes (approximately) and the fixed turbo mode, the differences may not be well appreciated due to camera sensor issues, but in reality they can be seen:

Finally, to talk about how the sheath fits the flashlight, the truth is that since it is a detail that I like and that not all brands offer it, I want to show you its use in images:

Final verdict

It does not surprise me that this Thrunite model is one of the ones that people have the most interest in, it is normal, more than a kilometer of light distance attracts attention. A comparison with the also excellent Thrunite Catapult V6 would be a good idea.

The size is contained within what fits, except for the big head, the rest is a little more than an EDC, and lighting a kilometer seems something incredible.

For me anyway, the important thing is to be able to get two hours with 909 lumens more than 9 minutes at 2713 lumens. And it is that thanks to having a larger size than the typical EDC with 18650 or 21700 batteries, it dissipates heat better and we can make better use of the LED.

By the way, the sheath that it comes with is great, since due to its size it cannot be put in a pocket so easily and it is good for protecting and transporting it.

The most brutal launcher in the Thrunite Catapult range is the PRO, if you like its features you can purchase it with complete peace of mind.

Things i love

- Have a 15 cm long flashlight in your hand that throws more than 1 kilometer.

- Sheath, to bring a sheath, which is of a certain quality I like. Not all brands put holsters on their flashlights.

- Apart from the maximum power, I really like having 909 lumens for two hours that it can sustain without heating problems, not everything is power, sometimes we need autonomy.

- Good finishes.

Things i would change

- I like that it throws, but I preferred to lose the intensity of the hot spot and that the light reaches a shorter distance in exchange for increasing the intensity of the flood halo.

- It always happens to me with the Thrunite buttons, I wish they were bigger, and without that border that gets in the way when pressing said button.
