Review Sanrenmu 733/7033
Introduction
We already know the brand
Sanrenmu, small knives (some exceptions) with quality and some of them really
gems belonging to the olympus of chinese knives as the model 710/7010 or
763/7063.
Today we are going to present a
model that takes years in the market although it has been renewed with the new
nomenclature of the brand, but also has changed the design, it is a shame that
it is no longer manufactured with an appearance like the old 733, but still can
find the model in stores.
Exterior design and appearance
We have the Sanrenmu 733 in
different versions, formerly there was only the 733 all in steel and
"frame lock" (with coated blade or not) but now we have several
options to choose with the new Sanrenmu format, the equivalent of now would be
the model 7033. We can choose both the handle scales and the locking system and
even with coated blade, some examples of different versions are: 7033 LUC-PH
(polycarbonate handle scales and “liner lock”), 7033 LUC-SCX (all in steel but
skeletonized frame and “frame lock”)...
General view
At first glance you can see that
it has a somewhat unusual design, sometimes the "strange" designs are
just appearance, at other times really work. In the handling section we will
see this, but i can already advance that in its case would be option 2.
Visually we have a whole knife in
steel, even the handle, of medium size. It has measures of 16.4 cm of total
length, blade of 6.4 cm of length and thickness of 2.4 mm, with a weight in
digital scale of 86 gr.

The blade is made of 8Cr13Mov
steel with hollow grind and “clip point” tip, which is not usually seen much,
also has a curvature in the back of the blade that we will see how it works.
The penetration is assured by its type of tip but also has enough belly to work
on cutting tasks. The factory sharpening is medium-low and the blade is not
well centered.

The "clip point" shape ensures penetration
Bad centered blade
For opening it has been opted
this time for a hole in the blade and a "flipper", so that each one
chooses how he wants to open it.
Detail of the opening hole in the blade
The handle is made of polished
steel without texturizing and with very anatomical shapes. There are no scales
above its structure and there is no "pocket clip" because it has been
replaced by a "carabiner". Factory stains are observed on the polishing
of the handle, being a finishing failure.

The locking system is a fairly
thick "frame lock" for the size of the knife, it is a system that is very
fine and not because it is a small knife it will have to conform with a weak
lock or without it (as it is becoming fashionable now.).
Great thickness of the "frame lock"
It is not the precise cutting of the latest models with "frame lock" of Ganzo

Handling and use
To assess the manageability of
this model i think it is convenient to start with its design, it will be
difficult to find a knife that fits so well to the hand with this size, both
the handle and the blade are designed for great adaptability. The curvature of
the handle makes it take very well, in addition the "jimping" makes
you can exert force and control, but does not end the thing, the curvature in
the back of the blade that we talked in the section of design now has
everything the sense, for "fine work" (delicate work) gives us an
advanced position for the finger (which i will show in the final video). Of
course, the handle is polished and has no textured on the steel, so the grip is
not good (but yes the adaptability to the hand).
More than enough sheet thickness for the job
Therefore, the adaptability and
manageability are excellent, in my opinion much more than the acclaimed and
famous Sanrenmu 710/7010, which is also a very good and beautiful knife but
does not have the functionality of this one.
The "flipper" does its
job but it is not easy to open with it if it is not with a wrist stroke, in
addition the retention of the blade is quite hard, more than that of its sister
710/7010, the "flipper" has “jimping” and If you open several times
at a time doing force can hurt the skin of the finger a little if you have
delicate skin. The other option is to open the blade with the hole that has,
but not being round (Spyderco type) and not to be smoothed or polished inside,
can scratch a little the nail when opening and leave a small scrape, to me it is
very uncomfortable opening it with that hole, i do not like it. Anyway, I love
"flippers" and i will always use that option in knives that have more
than one way to open.
The lock looks very good and
gives security, fitting a generous part in the blade.
The "frame lock" pushes the blade and it's decentralized
A comment on the absence of the
"pocket clip", does not feel so bad the "carabiner" to
carry out on the pants hanging, or use it in climbing or hanging from a
backpack on the outside, the system works well.

Final verdict
If you look at the photos
comparing 733/7033 and 710/7010 you will see that they share a lot of
similarity if you look across the area adjacent to the pivot. They are actually
built alike but with different designs. It is true that the 710/7010 is more
stylish and more elegant, but the one that concerns us today is even more
useful for real work by its characteristics.
Although we find some fit and
finish faults as the stains in the polishing of the handle and the offset of
the blade, the knife is built just like the 710/7010, it fits very well to the
hand with its different grip positions and i think it can be interesting the blade
design that offers us. I think that for the price, size (for being Sanrenmu)
and features, it is a blade that can be perfectly tested and useful in a real
work beyond collecting.
Pros
- Outstanding adaptability and
manageability thanks to the multiple ways of gripping the knife with the curve
for the finger on the blade, the "jimping" and the anatomical handle.
- Appearance all in steel that
draws attention, like its sister the Sanrenmu 710/7010 that we already reviewed.
- Perfect for fine work (delicate
work).
- A fairly contained price for
its size, which is not of the smallest of Sanrenmu.
Cons
- Looks somewhat aggressive for
having "clip point" tip, it is only a problem in certain places that
people can be frightened. But i think it is clearly seen that it is a working
knife and not defensive or hunting.
- Some will miss the "pocket
clip" or maybe not ...
- Blade retention too hard, the
"flipper" can not open the blade smoothly without shaking the wrist.
- The hole opening of the blade
should be polished on the inside to facilitate opening and not scratch the
fingernail when using it, and although it was polished for me it is
uncomfortable.
- If we want to pierce with the
whole blade into some element will not be easy because of the great curve of
the spine for the finger to do fine (delicate) work. You can not have
everything.
- The steel handle isn’t textured,
so it is slippery (but anatomical).
- Fit and finish faults such as
off-centering of the blade and polishing factory stains of the handle.
