Review Y-Start LK5009

Review Y-Start LK5009

Introduction

And we continue with party titanium...

This time i want to present a small folder knife with an air of greatness. Although my tastes are more by big knives, i must recognize that sometimes don't want or need hold too much weight and not know if you will have to use a knife, in that case you can take one like this without you realize, as in a kit survival, for example.

Let's see offered by this piece, with some surprises...

Exterior design and appearance

Altough we have already discussed previously other small knives, which today we respect has some unique features so far in the blog and YouTube channel.

Overview

The truth is it likes to see features from bigger folder knives in one of this size, because despite its size, it is not check back and offers us: titanium, ceramic bearings, "frame lock", leather case... impressive for a knife so small not?. Let's see it in detail:

We have between hands a folder knife with small dimensions, able to compete with the smaller Sanrenmus in it, but with premium finishes or high range.

Handle is made of titanium TC4 type for one of the handle scale (the one with the system lock) while the other handle is g10 without "metal liners" (there are 3 colors to choose, orange, sand and black). This is because, as all folder knife with real "frame lock", a handle scale is only metal and the other is the one that has a texture in g10 (or other material), in this case the handle where staying the "frame lock" is titanium. On the G10 handle scale, to say that is not supported by any steel "liner", this is good for weight but it is not for the fortress, since there is only G10 on aside without steel structure, but of course, a folder knife with this size is not intended for hard work, but to be useful cutting things. Say that we have hole cord surety as well.

The blade is a classic morphology "drop point" with hole opening and partial flat grind, using 440C steel. It seems that Y-Start has opted for this steel in the last knives that has put to the market in titanium.

Blade detail

It is say that the blade is incredibly thick for a blade as short, is very strong, both thickness as for its partial flat grind, in fact the blade is one of the things i like most of the knife for its design and back edge. We talk about 3 mm thick, so it has a good strength and will not bend with the effort. As for the factory sharp i think it is good.

Huge thickness for this size

Well centered blade

As for the measures we find:

Total length
Length closed
Thickness blade
Blade length
Weight in scale
12.6 cm
7.2 cm
3 mm
5.4 cm
34 gr

Also we have to comment that it brings a leather case for carrying it. The truth is that rarely it is seen that a folder knife bring a case, except rarely.
We will see in the paragraph of management and use.

Comparative

We will see it in front with the smaller folder knives that i have analyzed in the blog:

Management and use

Well, for its size and with a titanium part you can imagine the weight that has when we have closed in hand, no note. Therefore is perfect for putting in the shirt pocket, pocket pants, pocket rucksack or wherever because it will not or noted or throw to below the clothing by weight. In addition to that is small, the ends are very rounded, making it still seems smaller even and fit better in sites.

Grip handle is that it is, only one of the handle scale will give grip, it is normal at any knife with "frame lock", texture in G10 is aggressive, which i like always more than finishes too soft G10. The problem is that to access the "frame lock" it has been removed a good piece of G10 to get comfortably to it, and this affects that if you get knife, said titanium "liner" titanium is going to bother something in hand because in that part there is no G10 in the handle leading G10. Anyway is rounded and no sharpened of course, but the hand does not support in that area on the two handle scales as often is.

Opening can be done using the oval blade, it is normal that opening up to a hand is not easy to the hands of a man, that we know. Always can be used both hands for safer. But there is a surprise that it was not seen in another knife, it has an opening system as if it takes "flipper", but not carry it, the part of the base of the blade has a specifically shape that can be used to open the knife sliding finger back in it, like a "flipper", but there is nothing that abulte. Opening and is very soft and extremely fast (as if it was automatic) thanks to ceramic ball bearings even though the retention blade is something high.

Opening as a "flipper"

We must stop at this point with the "frame lock": if we open the folder knife slowly and soft, the lock system doesn’t go as deep as i would like, but i have tried to hit the back of the blade and hasn't given. If we open the folder knife hard, the "frame lock" goes much more deeper on the blade and gives more safety and confidence. But even opening it soft, the lock system didn’t fail to me.

"Frame lock" detail

To move the "frame lock", i must say that the handle scale in G10 has a great opening to fit your finger and be able to access it, it is a detail that is well thought due to the size of the folder knife, the access is very easy, but with some cons, in that area is only the titanium "liner" to support on hand when holding it, as i said before.

There is one thing i want to highlight and that in very few models is, the blade rests thanks to two cylinders on the structure of the handle, so that there isn’t stop cylinder as in other models and prevents it is deformed.

And even when i usually analyze the cases is in fixed knives, this time worth stop us because it is very rare to find us with a knife sheath, as well leather. The folder knife fits tight in the sheath, not moves nothing, and has a hole in order to bring hanging with a hitch.

Final verdict

Very useful to carry just in case you need an edge, put it in a survival kit, put it in the backpack pocket without without weighing anything, in pants in case is needed at any time everyday.

Blade with "drop point" morphology useful, it does not take up almost anything, very light, "frame lock", but with the problem that it doesn’t fit just as well if we open soft that if we open hard, ceramic bearings and leather sheath. Although i like bigger folder knives more, i know that many people that are seeing me love small folder knives like this. the best

The best

- A TC4 titanium handle scale, including "frame lock".

- "Frame lock" lock system in a small folder knife is something that i like (in bigger folder knives too).

- Very smooth opening thanks to the ceramic ball bearings.

- You have premium features on a small size folder knife.

- Are grateful the effort to bring a sheath (leather).

- La blade rests thanks to two pins on the structure of the handle.

- Easy access to the "frame lock" and unlock it.

The worst

- Pivot screw to adjust the blade should be standard.

- La handle scale in G10 does not support on a steel "liner" (save weight but weakens).

- The hollow to unlock the "frame lock" without G10 makes that the hand holding the knife in that area supports only on the titanium "liner" and not on the two handle scales.

- Aesthetically is ugly that the "clip pocket" screw protrudes so much and is as close to the blade with the folder knife closed.

- The “frame lock” is not as deep opening the knife softly that opens it with force.
