Review Thrunite BSS v5

Review Thrunite BSS v5

Introduction

Today we have the first flashlight of the Thrunite brand that we examine on the blog and on the YouTube channel, we refer to the BSS model in its version 5. It is always a pleasure to try a new brand.

I must say that one of the things I see is that it is a flashlight that, due to its size and power, can be used as an EDC without problems. Yes, it is of a contained size and without a large head but it has a 2676 lumen SST70 led. Almost nothing...

Design, appearance and build quality

The first thing that I think is evident is its tactical aspect, increased by that front crown that can be used for self-defense in some situations (or to put it on and light down). If you don't like it, don't worry, it's screwable, it can be removed. The fact that it is put on with a thread is the best way to keep it from coming off and to be strong in use.

By the way, you can remove the crown and leave it with a normal appearance or put the red filter that comes in the box to obtain red light, which has the effect of improving eyestrain at night, greater contrast with objects that illuminates, that allows to see a greater number of details and also that red light is more difficult for other beings to perceive from a distance.

The body of the flashlight is premium type III hard anodized aluminum, very well made and with good center grip due to the splines. Near the head we have some heatsinks, which will be needed due to the great power of the flashlight.

We find a two-position pocket clip, that means we can use the flashlight in various ways, for example pointing it forward on a hat or we can keep it in a pocket facing downwards.

The accessories included in the flashlight are:

- A strap to put on.

- Two-position pocket clip that can be removed.

- Replacement of two rubber grommets and a rubber cap for the USB-C port.

- Crown for the head, screwable and removable.

- High quality tactical red light filter.

- High capacity IMR 18650 battery.

Regarding the measures we find:

Total length

Width at widest part

Weight without battery

Dust and water protection

14,65 cm

2.8 cm

91 gr

IPX8

A detail that is rarely seen in flashlights and knives is that it comes with a sheath, and it is appreciated, at least I like to keep my knives or flashlights in their sheaths. The quality of it is correct, it has certain rigidity, it is not a bag or sack as we sometimes find in some knives.

Handling and use

If we look at the characteristics that the brand indicates:

We can appreciate some interesting things, such as its 2676 lumens of maximum power, for a short time as is normal due to the generation of heat for this size of flashlight.

But the most interesting thing is being able to have more than 600 lumens for more than two hours, or the 355 lumens mode (which is enough in many cases) for 4.5 hours.

The beam distance is 255 meters, which is very good, without being totally launching, as well as its resistance to impacts and IPX8 water.

An important fact is the high power LED it uses, the SST70, powered by an IMR18650 battery, which is included in the package, not all flashlights come with batteries, sometimes you have to put them aside.

We have 5 light modes plus the strobe, in my opinion, 5 modes is a good number, neither too little nor too much, so that we can adapt to each situation.

Apart from the turbo and high modes, which last about two minutes, to be able to see well for a long time, walking for example, when the turbo and high modes are cut we get a little more than 600 lumens to be able to see quite well. Or the low or firefly modes where, being still, you can be with light for many hours (blackouts in houses, waiting to be rescued in the forest or other areas, etc.).

To change modes, we have a side button and the operating mode is as follows: one press turns the flashlight on or off, a long press changes modes, two presses takes us directly to turbo mode, if we press three times in a row we access the mode strobe, which is always a good thing if it's separate from the fixed light modes. A button below the flashlight takes us to turbo mode directly if we press it.

The battery warning will be very useful to see if we have to make a charge, by means of a blue LED (good charge), red (low charge) or red flashing (very low charge). We will also obtain information during the battery charging process, indicating the flashlight when it has finished charging (it changes from red to blue), it will also indicate if there is a problem in charging with a violet color. Said charge is carried out by usb type c, which is the most comfortable way to charge, since there is no need to unscrew or remove the battery, this is an important point in favor.

The lighting has a throw but also flooding, I particularly don't like flashlights that throws a lot with a small point and then hardly illuminate, they hardly flood anything. In this case we have a good flood width, which is always what I particularly like the most, and a good sized hotspot in the center.

In the following screenshots we can see the low, medium and high modes, but they are not very well differentiated by the camera sensor, in reality, the modes are perfectly noticeable, with red light it is much better noticeable.

Using the filter we have a very interesting red light to use at night, I leave some captures also using it. It is curious how, because it is a red light, the camera is able to pick up the low, medium and high modes much better than with normal light, the difference in power is much better noticeable.

A good detail is that it can be used in candle mode, placed vertically on a straight surface, and that for this it has a support on the base, because if not, it could not be done due to the rear switch that it has.

Final verdict

A very powerful flashlight in a fairly contained size, EDC type, that's good because it takes up little space and doesn't weigh much, but with powerful flashlights it happens that the less size you have, the less room to dissipate the tremendous heat produced by the LEDs. The power that we get in turbo mode of 2676 lumens or the good amount of light for hours in such a small size makes it very useful for real day-to-day use.

Good management interface, with direct access to turbo mode, flashlight lock, double button...

Well designed, it's already revision 5, so there are details that have been polished from previous versions, such as USB-C.

Good assembly and good materials, the smoothness of the threads, which are greased, or even how the battery enters smoothly, a great flashlight without a doubt and recommended.

Things i love

- General quality, materials, assembly...

- The accessories are appreciated: case, removable crown, red filter, USB-C cable, strap...

- Small flashlight for the great power it offers.

- Good balance between thrower and flooder.

- I like that the battery can be charged without having to remove it, through the flashlight's USB port.

Things i would change

The side button seems a bit small to me, I would like the button to be bigger and for the metal ring around it to not be so close.
