Review Thrunite Thrower Headlamp

 Review Thrunite Thrower Headlamp

Introduction

For today we have the review of a head lamp, which can also be used logically as a normal flashlight by holding it in your hand.

Of this type of flashlight, I am especially interested in using it as a work lamp, we will see if it is possible.

Normally this type of flashlight is not particularly powerful, but this case is different. We have a SFT40 led with a maximum of 1755 lumens.

Design, appearance and build quality

Visually, the first thing we look at is its tactical, attractive aspect, with a somewhat larger size than other flashlights of this type, normal, since due to its power it needs to be powered by 18650 lithium batteries, which is larger than a battery. AA/NiMh, which could not properly supply the power that this 1755 lumen SFT40 LED can give.

The manufacturer already puts a 3400 mah 18650 battery in the pack, which may seem usual but does not always happen, some manufacturers do not include this in any of their models or in any of them.

The use for which this flashlight is designed is for the head, we have a strap where it can be fitted, so that we can walk or point the light at a target without having to use our hands, which would be free for other tasks.

Of course, we can remove it from the support of the tape and carry it in the hand, which, being in the shape of an "L" the body of the flashlight, is carried even more comfortably than traditional ones.

The body of the flashlight is made of IPX-8 waterproof aeronautical grade aluminum, with high quality as usual in the brand and with its corresponding central grooved area for better grip.

So far so good, but unfortunately we haven't found any "pocket clip", which I think is essential for this type of flashlight if we don't want to carry it on the head but rather in a front pocket pointing forwards.

We also do not find a magnet on the base to use it as a work lamp or a support to hang it.

The accessories included in the flashlight are:

- A headband with support to put the flashlight.

- Replacement of two rubber grommets and a rubber cap for the USB-C port.

- 3400mah 18650 battery.

Regarding the measures we find:

Total length

Width at widest part

Weight without battery

Dust and water protection

10.75 cm

2.65 cm

56 gr

IPX-8

In this model we do not have a sheath, which is normal because the product to be used with the headband is focused.

Handling and use

To start talking about handling and use, we are going to base ourselves on the table of characteristics offered by the brand:

We can, thanks to the specification sheet, imagine what we will get, firstly what is striking is the 1755 maximum lumens that the flashlight will give us in turbo mode or the 735 lumens in high mode, both for a few minutes.

And normally, after the high or turbo modes of the maximum brightness flashlights but for a short time (the heat makes it impossible to spend a lot of time with that level), we have the modes that will allow us to spend a long time with that level, classically hours. . In this case it would be just under 400 lumens for 4 hours, more than reasonable for walking, doing some work, caving or anything else.

The medium mode with 255 lumens and 10 hours seems very interesting to me also in case the flashlight is expected to be used for more than 4 hours. Of course, we have the low and firefly modes that will last us days, which have their use if we are not going to move from the place, as I always say blackouts in the houses, waiting to be rescued in the forest or other areas, etc. An advantage of these “L” shaped flashlights is that they can be placed upright on a table, for example the light will not hit the place where it rests as it would with normal flashlights, but it would point forward without loss of light. Of course, it is not used in "candle mode" pointing to the ceiling like the traditional ones.

The beam distance is 323 meters, which is a lot. This is expected from the very name of the product “Thrower”. To all this, thinking about the use of the flashlight, I like that the work lamps are more flooding than throwers, but as we have seen in the design part, this flashlight is not intended for that use, since it does not we have a support to hang it, it does not have a “pocket clip” or a magnet, so I understand that the meaning is more of an “outdoor” type and not at home to repair something.

As a good tactical flashlight, we have an impact resistance of 1.5 meters and an IPX-8 water resistance (2 meters).

We have 5 light modes plus SOS (there is no strobe), I think that 5 modes is a correct number, which allows us to choose very well how long we want autonomy but without getting dizzy with an excessive number of them

We have an upper button, as usually happens in this type of flashlight, for turning it on and off, as well as for changing modes. The way of use is the same as other Thrunite models and similar to other brands:

With the button pressed for a short space we turn on or off, the moonlight mode is only accessed if we leave it pressed with the flashlight off. Once turned on, leaving it pressed we rotate through the low, medium and high modes, a double press takes us to the turbo mode whether it is on or off, three presses would access the SOS mode.

We also have a battery warning, which is always very useful, so we will have information if we have to think about recharging. With the battery charged or slightly discharged, we will have a blue led, when it is low, it will turn red, and if it is very low, it will flash red.

Said charging is carried out by USB-C, which has already become the standard for all types of battery-powered devices. USB charging is very convenient, since we do not have to have an 18650 battery charger or unscrew the flashlight.

As for the form of lighting, it is clear that being called a “thrower” we are going to have a great launch, its smooth reflector helps this.

In the following screenshots we can see the low, medium and high modes, it may be that due to camera sensor issues the differences are not well appreciated, but in reality they can be seen.

Final verdict

Flashlight with good quality, as usual in the brand, well assembled, good materials, very powerful for its size, which can be used in the hand or with the headband, but it is a pity that it did not come with a pocket clip or a magnet on the base (something to hook it to or the rotating head would be great), then its use as a task light is reduced. In addition, I think it would be more useful if it were flooding for the type of work that is usually carried out with this type of flashlight.

But if the use you are going to give it is not a work lamp, it is great, to use on the head or carry it by hand and point it far away. But without a clip you won't be able to put it in a pocket pointing forward for example.

If you are clear about the use you are going to give it, it is great.

Things i love

- General quality, materials, assembly, very well made.

- Flashlight of compact size for the great power it offers, 1755 lumens, it is small to carry an 18650.

- I like that the battery can be charged without having to remove it, through the USB-C port of the flashlight.

Things i would change

- Too bad it didn't come with a pocket clip and magnetic base at the very least, to make it more usable as a task light.

- I think these types of flashlights, for a lot of closer work at a distance, would make better use of a higher flood beam.
