What folder knife to choose II
::Combo edge
The eternal quest of man wanting to have it all without
compromise. For some, the ideal choice to cover any need, for others the worst
choice to do nothing well and be worse than an full serrated edge or full plain
edge.
Again we enter a field in which each person does better
option than another, to me personally do not like too but even so i have some combo
edges in my collection.
Combo edge detail
It is assumed that part of the edge is plain for tasks that
require you to cut food into slices, fruit peel, carve a tree branch, notching
... well, and cut in general and of the serrated part to cut fibrous materials
as ropes, nylon and so, or use both edges so that it begins with the serrated part
to open your way and ends with the plain edge.
::Serrated edge
One option for hikers, industry workers, cut fibers and ropes
is the specialty of this edge, but do not forget that a plain edge also cuts
ropes and fibers. Persons that use a serrated edge ensure that materials are
cut much better than a plain edge, however it is clear that there are more
people who prefer plain edge for its versatility in general.
Serrated edge detail
It is also used in self-defense knives designed to lacerate
and not to stab, as the "Spyderco civilian", so that blade can easily
cut across the clothing of a person and not slip as would do a plain edge. In
conclusion on the types of edge just I say it is better that each person test
each type and value wich you like best or what is the best for their
activities, but overall I think the winner for most persons is the plain edge.
Big survival or
tactical folder knives
Earlier we talked about the EDC to carry on day after day, they
are knives with small size and lightweight,
but sometimes this is not enough, we need some more strength, heavy or larger size,
simply because we want more comfort when grab the handle and fits the size of
your hand because we will work in hard tasks in the field (for example) or
simply because we want that style.
As there are thousands of varieties, let's define what we
call a big and not super big knife, we would talk about 20-24 cm in length and
between 8.5 and 10 cm blade, this is in my personal opinion. We can find real
monsters that move away from these measures and compete in size with survival
knives, hunting or tactical large knifes, for example some models from "Cold steel" such "espada
XL", "rajah II" or so, these are models that are out of the
normal and the large concept and those blade size are illegal in many countries
having to take them only at home. The laws of most European countries are
stricter than those of the US and many brands come from there.
Returning to what we consider "large" a knife
between 20 and 24 cm in length will be very versatile and suitable if it is
well built and has a good lock for hard tasks. Of course everything is not the
length, there are also factors such the morphology, thickness, sharp angle and
so, it is not the same to pry with a large "Opinel" than with a
tactic or a survival knife such a “Zero tolerance".
