Review Harnds CK7006

 Review Harnds CK7006

Introduction

For a few years now, user requests that they wanted less weight and size in their pieces have had an effect, and manufacturers and designers have followed suit.

However, there are knives from the golden age of chinese cutlery that are already legend. This is one of them and I think I owed this review-tribute to it.

It is one of the most mythical Harnds knives, the Blazer CK7006, because knives of this size are no longer made (or very few). But there is another good news: it maintains the price of that wonderful time.

Exterior design and appearance

I have no doubt that the first thing that occurs to someone who sees it for the first time is something of the “what a beast” type, and that is that its dimensions are impressive.

We have a “clip point” blade of a generous length and thickness, Hollow grind and 9cr18mov steel. At this point we must stop to explain that at the time to which the knife belongs, D2 steel was not practically used as it is now, but almost all were Chinese steels of the type 7cr17mov, 8cr13mov, 8cr14mov, 9cr13mov and 9cr18mov, this being last one of the best that could be found. Of course this, among other things, also affected the fact that the parts were cheaper before than now,

We can see that the blade is very robust not only because it is 4 mm thick, but also because the hollowing starts quite low, so the 4 mm area is large in height.

Something to highlight is the beautiful handle that it brings, I think it is very attractive because of the red and black combination that they have chosen, the truth is that it is rarely seen in other models. It is made of G10 and the texture has a good but not aggressive grip.

Regarding the lock chosen for this piece, it is a "liner lock" with a good thickness and a second lock to reinforce it, which we can activate or deactivate.

There are not many Chinese knives capable of rivaling the measures we have here:

Total length

Handle length

Blade thickness

Blade length

Scale weight

24.2 cm

14 cm

4 mm

9.8 cm

225 gr

In any case, it is simply a little larger than the large sizes that we are used to seeing, it is not exaggerated, but it is noticeable that it is larger than almost everything that we usually see in chinese knives, although there are more still big, like the Enlan EW039, but with worse steel.

As a surprise, it comes with a rigid sheath that seems to be of good quality, the truth is that it is a joy that a knife of this price (cheap for what we usually have today) comes with it as standard.

Handling and use

When we have the big handle in hand and we want to open the piece, we will have to use the thumb studs, without having another option, of course the "flipper" is my favorite way of opening.

The smoothness is not what we are used to lately, but again we return to the same thing, now ceramic (or steel) bearings are used in many knives, which gives a greater smoothness than the classic metal or teflon washers, but at change also helps to increase the price a little. Blade retention is good and it won't open when shaken, plus it comes with a sheath (some brands could learn from this).

Once we have it closed in our hand, the first thing we realize is the measurements of the piece, it is large, some would say enormous, but for me it is simply "large" within normal limits, I like big folding knives.

To open it we must use the thumb studs, which have an adequate size, although they could be a little larger and the grip it offers us is good. As the handle is large (since it contains a large blade), we may have to advance our hand a little on it to be able to reach the thumb studs. There is no problem in opening, it opens with a certain smoothness, but without reaching, of course, the height of a knife with bearings, at the time of this knife it was not usual to carry them as it is now (neither current prices ).

The sensation once opened, and in the hand, is that of carrying a fixed knife, but don't forget that a folding knife is not a fixed knife no matter how strong it may seem (I invite you to watch a video on my channel in which I talk about this topic, reflecting).

The handle is long and thick enough to be able to hold this piece securely, and the blade is very strong due to the fact that the hollow of the blade starts quite low. I emphasize that the handle can be one of the thickest I have seen in a folding knife.

Something that I really like and is not so easily seen is the marked “clip point”, it does not hide it, it is quite accentuated (without exaggerating either).

When looking at the position of the "liner lock" we can see that it has been left in a suitable position to be a new knife, specifically I like that they are right at the edge of the base of the blade, but entering the thickness of the entire blade, to prevent slipping and the blade could close with minimal pressure on the back of the blade.

We can activate the second lock, although I don't think it will be a panacea, it moves a portion of metal to help the liner lock blade, but I think this folding knife deserves a “back lock” as strong as possible to being able to take advantage of the power of a 4 mm thick blade like this one, in the style of the Enlan EW039. In any case, this "liner lock" seems to be well executed, although I would put a "frame lock" or better a "back lock".

Proceeding to cut paper with the factory sharpening, I note that the rumors are true that it comes with an exquisite edge, cuts without tearing, very sharp, impressive.

Final veredict

One of the mythical knives in history in chinese quality brands. Actually, pieces (practically) of this size are no longer made, one of the queens without a doubt of that golden age, which surprisingly, still maintains the price that it used to have more or less, so, if you lack it in your collection, I think which is a good time to buy it.

Great size, the best steel of its day for similar prices, build quality from a big brand, Harnds, double lock, attractive black and red handle, for a price I don't think you can find anything like it.

Things i love

 - Large size, for some massive, for me it is a good size within normal.

 - High quality construction and materials.

 - The best chinese steel in this price range that was used, 9Cr18Mov.

 - Very attractive handle in red and black G10.

 - I quite like the sheath it comes with, I wish other brands would do the same with much more expensive knives than this one.

Things i would change

 - For a folding knife of this size and above all, with such a powerful blade, I would have liked to see an oversized "back lock" or at least a very thick frame lock.

 - Double locking could be more effective.
