Various issues, doubts, questions... about knives 1
Introduction
On this occasion, i would like to
try to respond, reflect and discuss on issues that i see much everywhere. I do
not want to impose anything on anyone, but i get an analysis and reflection on
different facts or very frequent questions...
Issues and questions
I have picked up a folder knife, I did "batoning"
with it and the blade has resisted!, why then use a fixed knife?, must be
idiots those using fixed knives and not folder knives with how comfortable they
are. Yes, no longer blocks just as well…
Answer: If you have no choice to do "batoning"
with a folder knife, do it with the lock system off, this technique does to suffer
and to fail the lock system. Overall, never do it with a folder knife, and if it
is not necessary, either with the fixed knife.
I have taken my knife "butterfly" /
"balisong" for the field, i have nailed to a tree, i tried to do a
hole levering and rotating the knife, i have broken the tip. The knife that i
bought is rubbish.
Answer: First, do not nail blades in the trees, do
not hurt them, use for your tests dry trees that have fallen who are on the
ground or branches on the ground.
Second, since the Olympic Games have
been around i will do a simile: can you imagine putting to do floor rhythmic
gymnastic to a hammer thrower of 140 kilos? Or, can you imagine putting a
gymnast of 40 kilos to make women's weightlifting test?. Gentlemen, everything is
what it is. Your knife is not a garbage (or perhaps too), you've used it bad.
It is not made for that. If you had a Ferrari and put it for cross ground and
you break the suspension or get stuck, it would also be rabbish your car?.
We must know which tool to use
for everything, do not use a hammer to peel apples and scissors to nail a sprig
shock. In the case of cutlery passes equally, use the right tool for what you are going to do. In this case, a very
thin knife "butterfly" is made for maximum drilling, it has a narrow
width blade, very pronounced back edge and little material on the blade. Normal
to have broken.
In lock systems of the knives all are very clear.
"Axis lock" better than "frame lock," and this better than
"liner lock", and this better than "back lock" and...
Answer: It is not true. It depends on the quality of
construction and materials used in it, as well as its definition, quality
control etc etc. A quality liner lock and well implemented can be better than a
bad frame lock or axis lock. It is true that it may structurally be given more
stamina to one system or another but, influence very noticeably all parameters
commented.
To give hits to the back of the blade upside down to see if
it closes is the right way to check the safety of a folder knife.
Answer: I'm not going to convince anyone if it is
appropriate or not.
But I add a thought: check should
mean to do, "in laboratory conditions" something than then yes you will
do in real life. But you using a knife do not plan to give back edge hits or
yes? or do you go to open a coconut giving hits with the blade upside down? I
think not... So? well, what you can to do is click on hard surfaces at
different angles of the surface with the blade, so that a more realistic test
would be stab with the knife a stump of wood or element harder slab type, then,
to stab in different directions and angles maybe you can see if the lock fails.
If it is a less hard material, and therefore will penetrate the tip, like wood,
then also in the movement of unnailing can give us clues to the lock system.
All the carbon steels are the same, and all stainless
steels too.
Answer: It is not true. There are many carbon steels
and many stainless steels. Especially usually see much people believe that a
stainless steel is a kind of universal steel, stainless steel anything is like any
other of the same steel. I refer especially to the culture of the home kitchen
where they always have used stainless knives.
Actually, there are many types,
each with different qualities of fragility, toughness, hardness, flexibility,
corrosion resistance... The steel quality is paid, is one of the reasons for
the price differences, that, control quality and how good is the heat treatment...
I bought a knife with lock system. now I am able to do all
sorts of things with it because as it has a lock system it won’t close and my fingers are not in danger...
Answer: ERROR.
A knife is not a toy, and the lock system is to protect you, but it is not
foolproof, they can be closed with suitable pressure or pressure angle between
the handle and the blade. And yes, you can make a cut to the bone or cut
tendons. If you're going to use it for something that you think need the
toughest lock system in the world, a council: the hardest lock system in the
world and cheaper is called fixed knife (and better full tang).
You have to be stupid to spend more than € XX in a knife
when i buy a folder knife in a gas station or a souvenir shop one for almost
nothing money that does the same.
Answer: I won’t be me to tell anyone what to spend
their money. But I can say that look for a good quality/price ratio on a knife
or folder knife is a thing that you will not regret it.
That gas station knife has a lock
system? And if it has one do you think is reliable?. How much are your fingers?.
What handle brings? plastic? It
will break when pressure is. What steel brings? Are you going to irritate when
in two minutes it doesn’t cut?. No matter how cheap it is something, if you're
not happy with it you have thrown the money. There comes a moment just that for
beating the quality of a knife we have to spend double or triple, that may be
the point just where to look.
Carrying a knife is of marauders, everyone who use it are
criminals.
Answer: Perhaps they may not agree with that
statement shepherds grazing with their animals as they sit on a rock to peel an
apple with his knife, or cut a piece of rope that was hooked in the leg of one
of their animals.
Neither the electrician who
always leads cable stripping, or in the store when the worker opens plastic
pallet or boxes.
No need to use at work, if you do
bushcraft with your backpack you want to carry a tool such as a folder knife or fixed knife for many things.
Simply it is not a weapon, it is a tool. But as such a tool can be used to harm (or defend). Nobody suspected from a hammer or a big wrench, but they can also hurt. But, suspect anyone carrying a knife in the night in social places in the city as night clubs or meetingplaces....
